What is cancer?
ReplyDeleteOur body consists of about a billion cells. Most cells divide with the purpose of growth, replace or supersede old cells (skin flake) and recovery (injury). If cell growth does not respond to normal controls, because of changes or mutations in the genetic material, the cell will not stop dividing. This is called malignant growth or cancer.
Normal cells stop dividing automatically if injury has been repaired. Cancer begins with one cancerous cell that divides into two cancerous cells, two into four; the four become eight, the eight sixteen and so on.
BREAST CANCER is a malignant (cancerous) growth that begins in the tissues of the breast. It is the most common cancer in women but it can also occur in men.
Each year, thousands of Kenyan women are affected by breast cancer which not only impacts on the individuals living with the disease but also on their families, friends and loved ones as well.
SELF ASSESSMENT

Look at yourself in the mirror; look for changes that are unusual. For example:
a. Any changes in the shape/size of the breast/nipple
b. Any change in the position or colouring of the nipple, including inversion
c. Any dimpling, denting, scaling or discolouration of the skin
2. …………….FEEL
Feel your breasts, feel for anything that is not normally there. For example:
a. A lump or swelling in your breast, that feels different from your breast tissue
b. A lump or swelling in the armpit, arm or around your collarbone.
3. ……………. BE BREAST AWARE
Recognise any other changes. For example:
a. Discharge from one or more nipples
b. A pain in the breast, armpit or arm that is new to you.
When it is found at an early stage, breast cancer can be effectively treated. Report any changes that you find to your doctor without delay. If above 50 years, attend routine breast screening.
